Domestic Violence

The Florida Legislature has made it clear that domestic violence is to be treated as a criminal act rather than a private matter. As such, the state attorney’s office has a specialized unit to oversee and carry out its pro-prosecution policy for acts of domestic violence. The filing, nonfiling or diversion of criminal charges shall be determined by the state attorney’s office over the objection of the victim, if necessary.
