Is my spouse a narcissist?

Narcissistic behavior is very damaging within the confines of a romantic relationship. If your spouse displays these behaviors, it can be very difficult to reasonably engage in disputes and ensure that your emotional needs are met during your marriage. Psychology Today explains some of the common signs of narcissism within a relationship.

Boundaries are routinely violated

All people have personal boundaries. Respecting these boundaries, whatever they may be, is part of being a kind and caring spouse. Those with narcissistic tendencies do not respect boundaries and often take pleasure in the act of overstepping lines. For example, a narcissistic spouse might take things of yours even after you've asked him or her not to. Your spouse may also broach subjects that you've repeatedly asked not to discuss or violate your physical space in a way that's uncomfortable for you. These actions exhibit a level of carelessness that it can be hard to recover from.

Conversations are one-sided

It's also quite difficult to talk with a narcissistic spouse. You'll often be interrupted or your opinions will be dismissed. A narcissist is most concerned with his or her own opinions, and anything that counters them is likely to be taken with hostility. This makes it impossible to have a healthy relationship since you'll be prevented from talking through problems in a constructive way.

You're subject to negative emotions

Narcissistic spouses are often easily upset. A minor disagreement can kick off a huge display of emotion, as many narcissists behave in an overly bombastic way to cover up some past hurt. As a result, even a perceived slight can seem like a major insult, and you may find yourself apologizing for things you didn't actually do. They can also become upset if they feel they're not being paid enough attention, which can lead to constant squabbling.
